Dozens of artists will turn their neighbors' front porches into an open-air gallery this Saturday, October 4, when the Hernando Beach Front Porch Art Walk returns from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Shoal Line Boulevard. Organizers say more than 50 artists and makers have registered, the biggest lineup the event has drawn in its run, with painters, photographers, jewelers, potters and woodworkers setting up near the Silver Dolphin Restaurant and Coldwell Banker Weaver Group Realty.

The event is free and open to walk-up visitors. It is part of the "1st Saturdays" series, held monthly except in July and August, when Hernando Beach's waterfront homes double as pop-up galleries for a few hours.

New this fall is a Curated Community Market, an add-on section featuring handmade specialty goods such as foods, soaps and candles alongside the usual art and coastal-themed crafts. Organizers describe it as a way to widen the walk beyond fine art without losing the neighborhood feel that has defined it since it started.

Key Facts
  • When: Saturday, Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Where: Shoal Line Boulevard, Hernando Beach, near the Silver Dolphin Restaurant and Coldwell Banker Weaver Group Realty
  • Cost: Free to attend
  • What's new: A Curated Community Market with handmade foods, soaps and candles

What sets the Hernando Beach walk apart from a typical craft fair is the setting. Instead of booths lined up in a parking lot, artists spread out along the street's waterfront porches, so visitors stroll from house to house the way they might wander a small coastal village. Organizers say the format is meant to protect what they call the "Old Florida" character of the neighborhood even as the event keeps adding vendors.

Parking is along Shoal Line Boulevard near the host properties, and the walk is family-friendly with no admission or ticket required. Vendors generally accept cash and cards, though that can vary by artist. Visitors looking to make a day of it can pair the walk with lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants in the area, several of which sit directly along the route.

The art walk happens monthly on the first Saturday from September through June, skipping the summer months of July and August. Organizers are already taking vendor registrations for future dates and say they expect the Curated Community Market to become a regular fixture alongside the art displays going forward.
