Deputies Shoot Man Who Fired at Them During Brooksville Domestic Call

Hernando County deputies shot a man on the front porch of a home on Audubon Drive in Brooksville on Sunday afternoon after he opened fire on three of them first, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office says. No deputies were hurt, and the sheriff's office says the neighborhood is no longer in danger.

The call came in around 2:37 p.m. Two family members inside the home had locked themselves in a bathroom and called 911, telling dispatchers they could hear gunshots going off inside the house. Sheriff Al Nienhuis said a family member had begun causing problems inside the home before the shots started.

When deputies got to the house, they found a man standing on the front porch. According to Nienhuis, the man fired at the three deputies on scene. They fired back and struck him.

The two relatives who called 911 were not hurt. The sheriff's office says the investigation is active and that details could change as more information comes in.

Officer-involved shootings in Florida are typically reviewed by an outside law enforcement agency alongside the State Attorney's Office, a standard process for any case where a deputy fires a weapon. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office has not yet said which agency will handle that review or when more details, including the suspect's name and condition, will be released.
